The Solution to Downhole Pump Scale Buildup

Downhole Scale Buildup Challenges

Pump Failure

~10,000 ESP annual pump failures due to scale buildup translating to ~$500mm in direct replacement costs and associated downtime (SPE Paper 113820)

Decreased Production

Prior to failure, scale buildup reduces production efficiency by 15-30% (NACE International)

Maintenance and Downtime

Wells with scale problems require 2-3x more routine maintenance interventions (SPE Paper 187340) which cost $15,000-$30,000 per event depending on well depth and location

Current Solutions Fall Short

The TenEx Solution to Scale Buildup in Downhole Pumps

CeraFlO™ + Scale Breaker TSB™

  1. Eco-friendly tailored formulations

  2. Dissolving hard inorganic scale (i.e., iron oxides)

  3. Removing and inhibiting organic scale/disposition (i.e., paraffin & asphaltene)

  4. Wettability modification

  5. Enhancing heavy oil mobility

CeraFlO™: Dissolve, Inhibit, Flow

Designed to dissolve and inhibit paraffin and asphaltene in the formation, wellbore, pipelines, transfer lines, well metallurgies, downhole equipment, and difficult-to-reach locations. 6 custom versions with different strengths and purposes to accomplish 3 things:

  1. Dissolve Organic Deposits

  2. Inhibit Organic Deposits

  3. Lower Heavy Oil Viscosity

  • Corrosion testing was performed by comparing TenEx Scale Breaker versions with HCl solution. Metal rods (C-1018) were immersed in the solution and subsequently subjected to an oven temperature of 105°F (40°C) for a duration of 5 days.

  • After 5 days exposure period, TenEx Scale Breaker exhibited no signs of corrosion, showcasing its corrosion resistance. In contrast, HCl continued to corrode the metal rods, leading to the formation of metal fragments at the solution's bottom.

Solution Testing and Treatment Process

Scale Sample is sent to TenEx

  • Client sends downhole pump scale sample to TenEx along with information on affected wells

TenEx conducts testing on scale with various CeraFLO + TSB formulas

  • Stage 1: CeraFLO Treatments

  • Stage 2: TSB Scale Breaker treatment

  • Dissolution quantified at each stage to determine optimal treatment

Optimal Treatment Implemented

  • TenEx blends optimal treatment and sends to customer

  • Customer implements treatment according to TenEx instructions

  • Data is collected at each stage to quantify impact
